Dogs compete at dog shows to earn points or certification. Dog show are of many types. The most common is Conformation show in which dogs are judged on the basis of their appearance. Also we can say that a show in which dogs are rated for how well their appearance conforms to a standard is known as conformation show. The first modern conformation dog show was held in England.

Another type of show is obedience trial. In this type of show a dog is judged on the basis of how he responds to commands such as "sit", "down", "stay", "come", and "heel." etc. Dog ability is a kind of sport in which dog is passes through the obstacle and judged according to time and accuracy. A specialty show is a dog show which is for a single breed unlike all other shows like conformation show. It can be national or regional.

A Novelty Show is a display or competition in which specimens are in some novel. Photo competition is example of novel show. There is one event to encourage dogs is Tracking trial event. In this event dogs are encouraged to make use of their strongest facility, the ability to follow a scent trail. The competition can be of finding an article in suitable situation in which performance of the dog can be accessed.
